A clinical study investigating Benegut®, a standardized Perilla frutescens leaf extract, has now been published in AgroFOOD Industry Hi-Tech. The study is particularly meaningful to me because Benegut® was the first ingredient I developed specifically for digestive health during my time at Vital Solutions. It represents an important chapter in my scientific and entrepreneurial journey: translating botanical knowledge into a standardized ingredient supported by analytical, mechanistic and clinical evidence.
The study was designed and initiated while I was still leading Vital Solutions. Its implementation was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the clinical phase could finally begin in 2022. The results became available around the time I sold Vital Solutions. I nevertheless remained involved in the preparation and scientific review of the publication together with the other authors. Scientific publication takes time. Seeing the study finally published is therefore not only professionally rewarding, but also a reminder that meaningful research requires persistence, collaboration and long-term commitment.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study investigated whether a single 300 mg dose of the standardized Perilla frutescens leaf extract could reduce gastrointestinal discomfort after a high-calorie meal. Thirty healthy adults completed the study. Overall gastrointestinal discomfort was assessed for 90 minutes following intake of the test product or placebo. The primary endpoint showed a statistically significant reduction in overall postprandial gastrointestinal discomfort after intake of the extract compared with placebo.
Supportive improvements were also observed in symptoms including: fullness – bloating – burping – nausea – abdominal discomfort and cramping No product-related adverse events were reported. The findings support the potential of standardized Perilla frutescens leaf extract as a natural option for acute postprandial digestive comfort.
Today, through Newday, I support companies in developing scientifically credible, differentiated and commercially relevant health ingredients and products. This publication reflects the kind of work I continue to stand for: connecting science, clinical strategy, product development and market relevance to create innovations that can deliver genuine value for consumers.
